Life is important

In today’s society we are all overworked trying to get ahead so we can achieve the so called “American dream.” Yet as we amass more and more wealth, and consume more and more products, we remain unhappy for the most part. It is never good enough what we have. We go out and buy beautiful houses, fancy cars, the best entertainment systems, the boats, the trucks, and toys, toys, toys. Our neighbor goes out and buys something different, and we must have that or something bigger and better. We wonder why there are huge problems with obesity; we wonder why our kids won’t listen to us; we wonder why there are such high divorce rates.

I’d like to share a verse from Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching:
“To keep on filling is not as good as stopping. Overfilled, the cupped hands drip, better to stop pouring.
Sharpen a blade too much and its edge will soon be lost. Fill your house with jade and gold and it brings insecurity. Puff yourself with honor and pride and no one can save you from a fall.
Retire when the work is done; this is the way to heaven.”

To often we are too busy to spend time with our children; or we are too busy to look after our own health. My oldest daughter turns 3 today. The past 3 years have gone by so fast. It had been a great honor to watch her learn, grow and explore the world before my eyes. I truly enjoy every moment I spend with my girls.

Don’t wait to spend time with your kids, otherwise they will be all grown up and you can’t catch up on those early years of teaching them to ride a bike or reading bedtime stories to them. Don’t put off your health. Treat your body as a temple that is to be respected. When you are ailing, take time for yourself to heal. Work will always be there lurking in the background. Your kids won’t stay young forever, and your health is most important. Get out there and enjoy life, even the small moments.

Namaste.
