Shine bright like a diamond

The other day I could tell my daughter was feeling frustrated. She had dance practice and her teachers were harping on her again. I told her to accept the criticism, practice, and then show her dance teachers that she can be a rock star.

I feel in today’s society, we seem to take criticism hard. We are so used to having everyone lie to us that we are all perfect. In sports, each kid now receives a medal or a trophy of some sort for simply participating. Instead, we should embrace the criticism to learn and grow from our mistakes.

Not everyone is gifted. For some of us have to work harder to achieve our dreams. There are dancers who struggled and we criticized that have blossomed into the beautiful swan. Even Michael Jordan had to work hard to become the basketball star he became.

When we have a dream, we need to remember to keep moving forward toward our goals. It’s one foot in front of the other until we reach the finish line. No matter how much we feel like lying down on the ground and want to give up, we must persevere toward the finish line. In one of my last half marathons I ran, I felt like doing just that. I was over the half way marker when my legs felt like they wanted to quit. I had to will myself forward and ended up walking the last 6 km. I ended up with a new personal best on this race.

I leave you with this quote from Rihanna’s Diamonds:

Shine bright like a diamond

Shine bright like a diamond

Find light in the beautiful sea, I choose to be happy
